The lack of continuity and the many changes in the administration of the Tourism Company of Puerto Rico (PRTC) are responsible for not creating effective advertising campaigns that address the real needs of tourism in the country.
Clarissa Jimenez, president of the Association of Hotels and Tourism of Puerto Rico (PRHTA) mentions that the inefficiency of the advertising campaigns of the PRTC is due to the frequent change of chief executive with each new administration to bring constant money on advertising strategies, often inconsistent.
“In general are good, but there is a lack of continuity and excessive government bureaucracy,” said Jimenez on the problems facing the PRTC to create advertising campaigns that address the reality of Puerto Rico tourism and marketing as a premier destination international level.
According to Jimenez, we need to legislate to create good advertising campaigns that address the real needs of the tourism industry in Puerto Rico.
“It seeks to promote legislation that promotes tourism in Puerto Rico and seeks to avoid any legislation affecting tourism in Puerto Rico,” said Jimenez on the mission of the PRHTA. Moreover, the organization also looks after the interests of members of the organization and to achieve the objectives of tourism business.
Deborah Nelson, director of sales and marketing Vedanta Hotel in Islam Verde, said that the PRTC would be like other government agencies and offices to appoint a director or a secretary for a period of ten years, as this works could give continuity to an advertising campaign and not have to change the advertising strategy whenever there is a change in government.
“The year 2009 was lost when we talk in real time, each new administration has two or three years to market the Island,” said Nelson about the new advertising campaign for the PRTC, “See Puerto Rico”, which was released the market in November 2009, losing the first year of the current administration to promote the country.
The executive director is a position of trust appointed by the governor of Puerto Rico and, according to Nelson, not always, the persons appointed to the post are appropriate to address the PRTC since many of the directors have no experience on how it works tourist industry.
