How to create a government strong enough to launch an attack working class life
The coalition Conservative / Liberal Democrat Coalition (Con-Dem) was improvised in a desperate attempt to create a government strong enough to launch an assault against the standard of living of the working class. Two thirds of the new cabinet went to public school. This is a government of the elite for the elite, and it will make hammering the rest of us.
Mervin King, the governor-elect of the Bank of England, spoke on behalf of the majority of the capitalist class in Britain where he welcomed plans cuts and urged the government to go further in its emergency budget. We must not forget that it was Brown, in 1997, who first gave the Bank of England independence from government, freeing shamelessly to campaign on behalf of the capitalist class. However, Cameron and Clegg do not need to be encouraged. The 6 billion pounds in cuts that have been declared are the tip of an enormous iceberg. It is not known how fast the rest of the iceberg is revealed, but no doubt, it will be. Cuts to be announced in the emergency budget will only be the beginning. According to the Financial Times (May 13, 2010), “Mr. Osborne (Finance Minister) will have to announce cuts to public spending of 57 billion pounds per year from an unprotected budget of around 260 billion pounds – cuts of about 22%. Needless to say, this will become a sharp test of political will … The public sector in Great Britain will face austerity measures similar to those reported in Ireland, Greece, Portugal and Spain. “
And like in those countries, we will see mass movements of the working class in opposition to the cuts. Such movements may force even strong governments to withdraw. In Britain, the profound weakness and division of this ‘government of losers’ will be revealed.
